University of Deusto celebrates 30 years of the NOHA Master Programme

Last Friday 20th October, the University of Deusto celebrated the 30th years anniversary of the NOHA master programme. The event was also followed by a first-time graduation of the students from the 2020-22 and 2021-23 cohorts.

To celebrate this date, a seminar was organized with three different round tables whose topics were discussed and agreed by the participants and alumni. The round table members were composed by NOHA alumni as well as lecturers of the master programme and combined a face to face and online format. Javier Arellano, the vice rector of International Relations and Research as well as Ane Ferrán, the dean of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences attended the event.

The event was introduced by Cristina Churruca, former NOHA director of the University of Deusto and the Joint NOHA programme coordinator on behalf of the current director Joana Abrisketa Uriarte. Julia Gonzalez Ferrera, the former NOHA secretary and former vice rector of International Relations at the University of Deusto and Horst Firscher, former NOHA director at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum and former president of the NOHA association gave the opening speech. Both speakers insisted on the importance of the programme as a milestone in the European high education and its relevance for the training of professionals in the field of humanitarian action in a current global situation where the crisis and conflicts are growing. Julia González also highlighted and applauded the commitment of the University of Deusto with the NOHA programme since its beginning.

Round tables

The first-round table about “Localization and decolonization” was discussed by Luis Enrique Eguren Fernández (2010-2011 cohort), independent advisor and lecturer at the University of Deusto; Malashree Bhargava (2006-2007 cohort), risk reduction advisor and UN Women and Pilar Diez Arregi (2001-2002 cohort), Basque Agency for development cooperation.

Mario Bastande (2016-2017 cohort), data advisor for the third sector and lecturer at the university of Deusto, Andrés E. García (2020-22 cohort) executive director at New Memories and Mikel Mendezona (2008-2009 cohort) NRC chief officer for programmes in Colombia, Ecuador and Panamá were the speakers of the second-round table about “New technologies”.

Last, Fernando Almansa, independent humanitarian advisor and lecturer at the University of Deusto, Noelia Blascovich (2019-21 edition), diplomatic officer for Argentina and María López (2001-2002), UNMISS return, reintegration and recovery officer and lecturer at the University of Deusto covered the topic of “Professional Career”.

The event was closed by the graduation ceremony of the two last NOHA master programme editions.
